Introduction to Material Science - Course Assessment

Explore the atomic structures and crystal properties of solid materials in this free online material science course.

Introduction to Material Science

Have you ever wondered what makes solid materials behave the way they do? This inorganic chemistry course answers all your questions. We go through the atomic structure, crystal properties, imperfections in solids and the electrical and mechanical behaviours of materials. We then explain how materials experience fabrication, synthesis and processing in fields like civil engineering. We also explore the intriguing world beyond inorganic crystals.

Condensation and Addition Polymerisation

Synthetic Polyamides

Polymers in the Human Body: Proteins

Protein Structure

Polymers in the Human Body: Nucleic Acids

This module covers different kinds of polymerisation, synthetic polyamides and polymers in the human body. We investigate condensation and addition polymerisation, the properties of nylon and kevler, and their various applications. Proteins and nucleic acids and their significant roles in body functions are also explained.

Useful Polymers

Designing Useful Polymers

Polymer Deductions

This module discusses useful polymers, such as terylene and poly(lactic acid), and their properties. You'll also learn about designing polymers to meet the needs of a specific application and the steps of predicting the type of polymerisation reaction used to produce a polymer.

Advanced Chemistry: Polymerisation - Course Assessment

This free online advanced chemistry course covers natural and synthetic polymers and the polymerisation process.

Advanced Chemistry: Polymerisation

Polymers are a diverse and essential class of natural and synthetic materials. This advanced chemistry course examines polymers and the polymerisation process. We discuss condensation polymerisation, synthetic polyamides and polymers in the human body like proteins and nucleic acids. We also explore synthesis and lay out characteristics of useful polymers, the types of polymerisation reaction and the repeating unit of a polymer prediction.

Structure of Benzene

Naming Aryl Compounds

Reactions of Arenes

This module covers benzene along with its structure and reactions. You'll learn about common and IUPAC names, two methods for naming aryl compounds. Basic principles of substitution reactions of benzene and the steps required for halogenation, nitration, sulfonation, and Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylations, are also explained.

Properties of Phenol

Reactions of Phenol

Benzyl Compounds

This module focuses on the structure, name, and properties of phenol. We look into reactions involving phenol's benzene ring and -OH (acid-base reactions). The preparation of benzyl chloride, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid is also described.

Advanced Chemistry: Benzene and Benzene Compounds - Course Assessment

This free online chemistry course explores benzene and phenol structure, naming conventions, properties and reactions.

Advanced Chemistry: Benzene and Benzene Compounds

The terms ‘aryl’ and ‘aromatic’ are often used interchangeably to describe compounds containing benzene rings. This advanced organic chemistry course examines the aryl group, arenes and benzene rings. We study the structure of benzene and phenols and IUPAC’s system of naming aryl compounds. We also describe the substitution reactions of hydrogens and hydroxyl groups in the benzene ring and the preparation of benzyl compounds.
