Strand 3 Junior Certificate Ordinary Level Numbers and Shapes

Numbers and shapes, concepts that are the basic building blocks of arithmetic and algebra. In this course, you will study a variety of topics to prepare you for your Junior Certificate. Cover topics like scientific notation and indices rules. As well as calculating interest, formulas used to calculate the area of different shapes will be taught. Whether you are a student or simply looking to brush up on your maths skills this course is for you.

Numbers are extremely important in our everyday lives. No matter who you are you will work with numbers on a daily basis. In this course, you will cover a plethora of different methods of working with numbers. Starting off you will cover converting numbers into and out of standard form before the indices rules. Could you list every single rule that applies to indices? Topics that focus on calculating monetary amounts will also be covered, such as compound interest, percentage loss and VAT.
As well as other complex numbers, shapes will also be included in this course. In particular, you will learn how to calculate the area of shapes like rectangles, triangles and parallelograms. Circles will also be covered, although other parts will be calculated. These include the radius, diameter and circumference. But outside of an exam, how would for instance find the area of the inner ring of a washing machine? Determining the area of compound shapes is another subject that you will get the chance to study as you progress through this course.
Upon the completion of this course, you will have a much better understanding of complex numbers as well as understand how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them. You will find it much easier to measure the perimeter and area of various shapes such as triangles, rectangles, hexagons, and circles.
