This grammar course explains how to use past and present tenses. It is important to know how to employ these tenses if you are going to become fluent in English. We lay out the different uses of verb forms and time-related words used in English to describe the past and present. We also study the different functions of the past and present tenses in various contexts. This course uses examples, exercises and audio clips to help you learn English.

This course introduces you to time-related words and phrases that help you determine what verb tense to use. We explain how to use the present simple tense to discuss a current fact (for example: “I work in an office') and the present continuous tense to talk about events unfolding at a particular time (for example: “I am writing a letter right now.”). We also show you how to form the present perfect and present continuous tenses.
The course then moves on to verbs that describe states and actions and covers the past simple, past continuous and past perfect tense. We explain how to use the phrase 'used to' and the modal verb 'would' to describe the past. We then study how to use auxiliary verbs for emphasis, to show interest, to avoid repetition and to form question tags. We also establish the importance of intonation and inflection.
